Of the 189 tokenized stocks and commodities indexed on Realmint, 163 claim physical 1:1 backing — yet 19 publish no proof of reserves at all, and one is openly unbacked. That gap between claim and evidence is the first thing to close before buying any token that says “backed by real gold” or “backed by real shares”, and closing it takes about ten minutes. Here is how to verify a tokenized asset is actually backed, using the same checks Realmint’s backing score runs across the whole catalog.
Backing claims vs published proof — 189 tokenized assets on Realmint (July 24, 2026)
What counts as proof of reserves?
Not all proof is equal. The strongest form is a third-party attestation from a named auditor. Pax Gold’s reserves are attested by KPMG — most recently in February 2026 — covering allocated bars held with Brink’s Global Services in London. An accounting firm with a licence to lose is confirming the gold exists.
One tier down sits the live reserves feed. Backed Finance, the issuer behind all 140 tokenized stocks on Realmint, publishes a continuously updated proof-of-reserves page comparing reserve holdings against token supply. It is checkable at any moment, though the pipeline is operated by the issuer itself.
The weakest tier that still counts is the self-published transparency page. Tether Gold reports its own bar list on tether.to. A bar list is better than silence — but the entity making the claim and the entity checking it are the same.
All three tiers clear Realmint’s backing bar: PAXG and XAUt both score 100 on backing, and Apple xStock (AAPLx) scores 90. The dimension weighs the proof of reserves, the audit cadence, and the backing mechanism itself. Where the tiers really separate is the next question — who holds the asset.
Who actually holds the asset — and does it matter?
169 of the 189 tokens name their custodian. PAXG names Brink’s. Kinesis Gold (KAU) names the ABX vault network, with audits published at kinesis.money. For XAUt, Realmint’s issuer records list the custodian as an unnamed Swiss entity that is a related party of Tether Gold.
Related-party custody is not an accusation of fraud. It is a shorter verification chain: the company holding the metal, the company reporting on it, and the company issuing the token all sit inside one corporate family. That difference is part of why XAUt scores 80 on enforceability against PAXG’s 100 — and it costs nothing to check, because the custodian’s name, or its absence, is in the issuer’s own documents.
PAXG scores 100 on backing as of July 24, 2026 — a KPMG attestation dated February 2026 and allocated bars in Brink’s London vaults. Composite 90/100.
See PAXG’s backing evidence on RealmintWhat if a token claims 1:1 backing but publishes no proof?
Nineteen tokens in the catalog publish no proof of reserves. Most are the exotic tail of the commodity list: four carbon tokens (BCT, KlimaDAO, Moss, NCT), the JusToken agricultural line (corn, cotton, soy, soy oil, wheat), plus oil, uranium, water, rare earths, copper, palladium, and a silver token. One, however, is a gold token: Comtech Gold (CGO) claims physical 1:1 backing and publishes no reserves proof. Its backing score is 70 — thirty points under every major gold peer.
Here is the part worth slowing down for: CGO’s composite score is 90, identical to PAXG. The other dimensions carry it — 95 on enforceability, 95 on exit, and 85 on control, meaning the issuer holds fewer freeze-and-mint levers. (Realmint scores control higher the less power the issuer has; PAXG sits at 0 there because Paxos can freeze any balance.) A strong legal wrapper and weak backing evidence can coexist in one token, which is exactly why the composite alone is not enough.
A composite compresses six dimensions into one number, and compression hides things. Two tokens can both read “90” while carrying opposite risks — one with an unimpeachable attestation and an issuer that can freeze your balance, the other with a hands-off issuer and no published proof its metal exists. Read the dimension that matches the risk you personally care about.
Can backing be perfect and the token still risky?
Yes — backing only tells you the asset exists. XAUt scores 100 on backing and 81 overall, pulled down by an exit score of 65 (redemption runs through the issuer’s portal, with its own gates and minimums) and a control score of 10 (the issuer retains broad powers over the token). The bar list can be flawless while the door out stays narrow.
That is why a backing check pairs with a redemption check. We ran the redemption numbers for the full catalog in a scored look at redemption, and the PAXG vs XAUt vs KAU comparison walks all six dimensions for gold specifically. The framework itself is in the six risk dimensions, explained.
How do you verify backing before you buy?
Four checks, in order. Find the proof-of-reserves document and note who signed it — a named external auditor beats an issuer-run dashboard, which beats a transparency page, which beats nothing. Check the date against the claimed cadence: an attestation from eighteen months ago verifies the past, not the present. Name the custodian and ask whether it is independent of the issuer. And match the mechanism to the claim — “1:1 allocated” should come with bar numbers or serials somewhere in the documents, while pooled reserves mean you hold a claim on a pool, not a specific object.
If a token fails the first check outright — a 1:1 claim with no published proof — treat the backing claim as marketing until shown otherwise. Realmint runs these checks continuously and compresses them into the backing dimension; every asset page links the underlying documents so you can rerun them yourself. The full catalog, filterable by score, is on the discover page.
Comtech Gold (CGO) composites at 90/100 while scoring 70 on backing — the catalog’s clearest case for reading dimensions, not composites.
